Reindeers and Christmas – a little history…

As everyone knows, each year at Christmas time, Santa Claus uses a team of flying reindeer to pull his sleigh and help him deliver gifts. The names of these reindeer are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder (or Donner), and Blitzen. The names are based on those used in the poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas written by Clement Clarke Moore in 1823.

The story of Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer

Rudolph the Reindeer’s glowing red nose made him a social outcast amongst the other reindeer. One foggy Christmas Eve Santa Claus was having a hard time making his flight around the world, so he asked Rudolph to lead the sleigh. Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer became a hero for helping Santa Claus and saving Christmas!

Rudolph’s story was written in verse by Robert L. May in 1939
