What is Mistletoe?

Mistletoe is a parasitic or semiparasitic plant that takes root on trees, mostly hardwoods. It looks like a hanging or drooping bush with a yellowish tinge to its evergreen leaves with modified roots that embed themselves into the trunks and branches of the host tree. Once in place the mistletoe forms tubes through which water and nutrients are collected. The mistletoe is slow-growing but persistent parasite.

The north American version of mistletoe is called the dwarf mistletoe and contains many of the same properties as the European version.

Holly Mistletoe

It is easy to confuse the two but in reality Holly mistletoe doesn’t exist  A Holly bush has many of the same properties as Mistletoe but they are in fact different plants. Both have small red berries and both are used as Christmas decorations. So to keep your kiss real, Kiss under a Mistletoe sprig and keep the Holly for the other decorations.

Top tips

1. When printing out your party kit use card stock or something with a little more weight than standard printing paper. Our top economy tip is to buy a cartridge block pad and trim down the pages to fit your printer. The paper is usually just the right weight and has a lovely matt texture. (N.B Please check your printer settings first!)

2. Use a craft knife or the back of a butter knife to score folds before putting together your party kit.

3. Allow yourself plenty of time to cut out and put together your party kit.

First, print the file called ‘cover’. Once it is print, flip the page over long ways, re-feed the page into your printer and print ‘inside cover’ onto the reverse. Next print ‘colouring-book-file1′. Now flip these 3 pages and re-feed into the printer, printing ‘colouring-book-file2′ on the reverse as shown.

When is Father’s Day?

Fathers day was founded by Sonora Smart Dodd and she was the driving force of the first Fathers Day celebration held in the same year 1910. She had been raised with her six brothers and sisters by her single parent father and Civil War veteran.

After she heard about the success of Mothers day, she consulted with her pastor. She told him that fathers should have their own day. Suggesting her own fathers birthday of date of June 5th proved too soon. It was later arranged by the pastors for the third Sunday in June.

Most countries that celebrate Fathers day in the world use the third Sunday in June in their calendars. Many schools encourage and help the children to make a handmade card or small gift for their fathers. Our garlands are simple and encourage children help prepare the for celebrating the father figure in their life.

In Australia, Fathers Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in September.

Diamond Jubilee Celebrating 60 years of Monarch, 1952-2012
